Jewelry Making Video: Serpentine Necklace
Posted by Eri
I just created a new jewelry making video of a pattern I call Serpentine Necklace.
This beading design is very easy to create and uses the same basic pattern as the Serpentine Bracelet, but with a little twist added.
I first made the necklace with the same design as the bracelet and I liked the result but I just thought it was a little too simple and could use a little something extra, so I added a picot design using seed beads.
The interesting part was I had to make the picot at the center of each 5mm swarovski pearl so it required an odd number of size 11 seed beads around each pearl to make the picot be centered on the pearl.
The picot gave a triangle accent to the necklace making a very delicate bead weaving design that I really liked.
I first tried the design with reddish colored pearls and dark purple seed beads and I liked it, but I also made one with white colored pearls and I liked it the best.
With the white colored pearls this design would look very nice being worn as bridal jewelry.
It would also be very easy to use this design to make a matching bracelet.
Here is a preview video of the video class:
If you are interested in taking this jewelry making class it is available both as an online video and as a DVD.

Hi Eri,
The serpentine necklace done in the white pearls and white seedbeads are much more exquisite. Have you tried using a size 12 beeding needle to do your work? I find that is much easier to thread through and much faster than trying to thread through the beads without one.

I found this video to be so informational. The necklace comes together quickly, and the options are endless. I think this would be cute with a matching bracelet. Thanks for the awesome video!

Hi Brenda.
I agree with you that the white pearls and seed beads are hard to beat with this design. With a similar but more advanced design, the picot necklace, I’ve had many students comment that they make very nice bridal necklaces and bracelets using white beads.
I haven’t tried working with a beading needle before, but I might give it a shot just to see if it helps me work faster. As you know, it can get pretty difficult to put the string through the beads when they are very tiny.
Thanks!

Thanks for your comment Jenny. I’m glad you liked the beading video and I agree with you that this design lends itself well to a matching bracelet. I haven’t made one yet but might get on that pretty soon.
Thanks!

Hi Laurie,

Hi Vaka,
I’m glad you like the necklace. I think you’re right that you can use many different types of beads to create different looking variations. That’s one of things I love about bead jewelry making is that even with one design you can experiment and come up with a host of different looks. The sky’s the limit!
Thanks!

Hi Tammy.
Sounds like you’ve put together quite an ensemble! Don’t forget to try the serpentine beaded ring as well. It’s towards the bottom of the page at this link:

If you make that you’ll have four pieces and really be doing the serpentine thing!
Thanks.

Thanks for the reminder about your serpentine necklace. It gets a little hectic at this time of year, and here isn’t time for me to get into very involved projects. This will be lovely for my daughter’s birthday next month, and I’ll make your picot earrings to match. That’s one of my favorites – the picot set.

Hi Eri,
I absolutely love this style of necklace. I have a friend who’s getting married in March (in which I’m coming out) and I’m going to use this same style, except I will be using Swarvoski Crystal Rondelles in Peridot color and black seed beads. I already did one and it looks beautiful. Thanks for such great videos. They really help people like me who get stuck doing repeated designs all the time.

Hello Eri ans Staff;
Eri as always you’ve outdone yourself again.
I love the serpentine necklace. You simplified the instructions so well, the choice of colors are lovely. Once I looked at that video, my mind started working on creatinging the sepertine necklace with different beads and thanks to your creativity I am able to create. I Love every video class that you have introduced. I love the simplicity of your instructions of all your jewelry.
Merry Christmas

Greetings and Blessings All! Thanks for this beautiful jewelry making addition. I am excited about making this in Smokey and Black combo, it is lovely. I also like the fact that it has the chain at the end which can be adjustable for many like the chocker look however I wear my necklaces looser. Right on time for holiday gift making ideas and not very costly. Have a wonderful Christmas God bless you all!

Hi Jo.
I like the idea of mixing this with picot earrings. The design is actually very different when you make these two jewelry pieces but when you see them together they make a good match. Thanks for the idea!

Hi Fern,
I’m glad you liked the design. I wasn’t planning on making earrings for this one but I’ll take a look at it again. Like Jo recommended I would suggest trying the picot earrings to go along with the necklace.
Thanks!

I find this to be a very versatile design. It can be very casual or extremely dressed up. Depending on the beads you use, it feels like a soft wave of water flowing over gentle stones. The Serpentine pattern is very soothing to make, and to wear. Thank you for this design as well as all your others.

This necklace will look great in so many colors making it a necklace you can wear with anything. I love the video it makes it so much easier to make the necklace since if it does not look the same as in the video. I can rerun the video and check my necklace as the video is running until I can find out where I made it wrong BEFORE I take the whole necklace apart ( which I have done ). Watching and listening I can find where I went wrong and do not have to take the whole design apart. Just the part I made wrong. I also like the fact that the video shows what the necklace will look like if bigger seed beads are used in the pattern. Thanks very much for the time put in making this video.
