Jewelry Making Class on Video: Serpentine Ring

I have been on a roll with serpentine patterns so I decided to create one more using this basic bead weaving technique.
This time I used it to create a Serpentine Ring.
The technique is basically the same as the necklace and the bracelet I already introduced. You put seed beads or round beads on one string and larger beads on the other.
I did something a little unique with the ring design.
I had always wanted a turquoise ring so I bought some 4mm natural stone beads at a bead show a while back, but I hadn’t done anything with them yet. If you are addicted to beading, I’m sure you know what I’m talking about. 
So I tried making the ring with these natural turquoise stones.
If you look very closely at the ring design, I used the turquoise beads to create a picot and then a serpentine weave both above and below the picot to create symmetry.
Of course, you don’t have to use natural stones when you create this ring. You can use any kind of round 4mm beads.
I also used 1.8mm sterling silver round beads around the turquoise beads because I thought it gave a nice contrast, but you can use size 11 seed beads in place of these if you like.
I also wanted to make the turquoise stand out so instead of using another round bead shape around the edges I used very light colored czech fire beads and the shape and color of those worked perfectly to make the focus of the ring design the turquoise beads and silver round beads.
This design is a little more advanced than the necklace and bracelet but is really fun to create.
The only thing you have to be careful about is if you use natural stones it can be difficult to get a precise ring size because the size of the beads can vary significantly.
So you have to experiment a bit to get the size you want.

I really love this design. You took a simple stitch pattern and turned it into some elegant. I used this pattern with pale yellow swarovski pearls and montana blue crysals it came out so beautiful. I love how you can take simple patterns and make them into something completely different. It has really helped me to be able to create some of my patterns as well. That is what I had problems with, making it my own. Keep up all great videos and I look forward to the new series come up.

I find that the holes in natural beads can also be offset, uneven, or very narrow. I always keep a battery powered bead reamer on hand and try to even put all the holes before I even start stringing them – prevents a sharp or jagged hole from cutting the stringing material. Just make sure to hold the bead underwater while using the bead reamer to prevent cracking and overheating. Great pattern!

The serpentine Ring is so beautiful. I think it will compliment the serpentine necklace nicely. I am enjoying learning the various weaving techniques and I look forward to seeing the full video of this project.

What a great way to to use leftover beads! I never would have thought of using the picot with larger beads as I always use it as an embellishment. I can’t wait to try this. I’m going to use some garnet rounds!

Really love this design, I just came across some small coral beads I forgot I had, and was wondering what to do with them. It was kismet that I then came across your design. Thank you for this inspiration and tutorial.

That’s great advice about using the bead reamer. I haven’t tried a battery powered bead reamer before. I’m still using the manual way. I need to upgrade! Thanks for the insights.

Isn’t it nice when you find a way to use beads that have been laying around for what seems like years? That happens to me sometimes too, and I know it makes my husband very happy when he sees my oversized bead stash being turned into something beautiful.
